Our Statement on D.C. Homeless Encampments

August 13, 2025: Our CEO & Executive Director, Ann Chauvin, shared this comment in response to current events in the District of Columbia that are affecting our client population.

Since 1958, Woodley House has stood as a beacon of light for those facing mental health disorders who might otherwise be hospitalized or homeless. As our residential programs have grown over the years, we’ve strived to help as many Washingtonians as we can.

This week, with the increased presence of federal law enforcement in the District of Columbia, the White House is moving to clear homeless encampments from the city. Many in these encampments may wind up unnecessarily hospitalized; these are likely individuals who already have experienced years of trauma.

As ever, Woodley House stands ready to work with our hospital partners to provide dignified housing and support services for D.C. residents facing a mental health crisis. For nearly 50 years, our crisis stabilization program, Crossing Place, has operated as an effective community-based alternative to hospitalization. Our doors are open and we’re dedicated to getting more people housed with the resources they need to thrive.
